One step forward

Hi. Hope you've all had a good day. After getting used to my diagnosis, (follicular lymphoma) and initially told I would be going down the watch and wait route, I am now waiting for a date to start radiotherapy at Freeman hospital. The support I've had from the consultants (shared care between Freeman and Durham), nurse specialist, Macmillan advisers and online support group has been fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone and they've put my mind at rest about the planning of the radiotherapy. and the treatment itself. Still not sleeping well, hence the late night, but managing to cope better through the day.

    Hi hessom,

Hope you're well and thankyou for your response. I take it you've been to Freeman hospital too. I've got no complaints so far. It's a great idea having an online forum, where people understand what you're going through.

    Take care,

    Lindsay

Not quite. I'm from Durham myself and know an oncologist that used to work at Freemans for a number of years and have met a few individuals via him etc.

Yes, the Community is still quite new but we know how helpful it can be to talk and share stories and experiences, as well as ask for help!

    Hi @LindsayB22 ,

It is really good to hear the care you are receiving such excellent care, and that the support from the Macmillan's and online is really helping you too. That is encouraging to hear.

It is always good to be able to chat with others who understand what it is like. Are you still waiting for the measuring appointment and scan too? I think the main thing about radiotherapy is the tiredness that occurs and the possible skin reaction. Lots of rest and moisturiser every day will help when you do get started.

I do hope that the sleeping improves and it is good your days are getting easier. Please feel free to come and chat anytime here, we can chat about anything. Hope today is going ok for you.

    Hi Hesson and Lou,

Today has been a good day, meeting up with friends I haven't seen in years. I've had the consultation and waiting for a letter to go for measuring/scan. Freeman hospital is more like a hotel and is very relaxed and spotless. I asked the consultant about skin irritation and he said I probably wouldn't get any, giving the area where the lymphoma is, right in the middle of the two kidneys and next to a blood vessel.

    Hi @LindsayB22

Great to see you posting again and lovely to hear that you are meeting up with old friends again.

My experience of radiotherapy was not unpleasant and with all that support you are getting, I am sure that it will be the same for you too.

Didn’t know @hessom is from Durham too. Am Feeling homesick! We have direct flights from Jersey to Newcastle every Wednesday and I am hoping to fly up in April for some cricket (weather permitting), a trip to Beamish and perhaps a bit of retail therapy in Newcastle.

    All the best.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks to the lovely people on here and Macmillan, I'm no longer apprehensive about the radiotherapy procedure. I'm due to have my marking scan next week, but as the mail round here is diabolical, I think I'm going to have to ring the hospital and ask when it is, in case the letter comes too late, like last year for another health issue. Luckily then, I'd already made the appointment by phone

Jersey is a lovely place, but I hope you have a good time in Newcastle when you come to visit in April.

Stay positive and remember people want to help so let them.

I found writing a blog helpful as it gave me a voice to celebrate the good days and debate the bad days.

    Keep smiling xxxxx
