Dealing with ascetis. How to eat and drink more.

bobstebobste Posts: 1

My mother has gastric cancer and substantial fluid build around her stomach. She constantly feels full and has not been eating much or drinking. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get more liquid and calories in with this issue. Here doctor doesnt want to drain the fluid frequently. Also at this point they arent willing to put in a feeding tube or iv, nor does my mother want a feeding tube. Thank you.

Hi @bobste, a big welcome to our community!

I'm very sorry to hear your mother has cancer. I cannot give you advice myself, however, we have a lovely oncology nurse on board @LizzyB73 who might be able to help or point you in the right direction. I have tagged her in this discussion, she'll reply as soon as possible. :)

I hope you and your mother are staying safe amidst the current situation.

    Best wishes,

    Blanka

    Hi @bobste

Thank you for getting in touch. Managing ascites can be quite difficult. Do you know why the doctors do not want to drain some of the fluid away? I am guessing they are trying to protect her from a hospital visit at this time of coronavirus, however, if she is very uncomfortable, it would be worth a conversation with her team to see if they are willing to offer drainage to alleviate some symptoms.

You didn’t mention if your mother was on any form of cancer treatment at all.... again this may affect the reasons as to why drainage may not be offered at this time.

Dietary advice wise, offering small amounts of food more often rather than larger platefuls may be more palatable at this time. Also there are build up drinks that can be used as food supplements if your mother is not wanting to eat much.

I wish you and her all the best at this difficult time
